Here's our top basil growing trick. We've tried growing basil from seeds and haven't been too successful in the past so some years ago Martin came up with this way to ensure a steady crop all spring and summer long.
We get fresh potted basil in the grocery store.
Cut all the stems off at dirt level and stick them in a glass of water for a couple of weeks...
...after which the ends look like this. Hairy little things.
Get a flower pot out and fill with potting soil...
... and plant the hairy legs in there and water well. They will continue to grow for a loooong time and when you cut the tops off new growth will emerge. We usually keep a small pot like this in the kitchen window and huge pots outside as soon as the risk of frost is over. Basil can't stand frost, one cold night and it will all have been in vain.
Also basil needs to be watered pretty often so keep a watering can close by. Ours in the top photo is an attachment for Pet bottles, works like treat!

EDIT MINI UPDATE: Martin spoke to the vet a little earlier and Mini may possibly have her surgery already tonight and if they are able to and if everything goes as well as we hope she may be home tomorrow already! Fingers and toes and everything else crossed!!!
